Sutton has a very proud history in both the Mens and Ladies sections of the Club and has always had a very open and progressive approach to the game whilst at the same time maintaining the best that tradition has to offer.
The ladies section of the club dates back to the late 19th century, while the mens was started soon after in 1891. For many decades the two clubs were run separately until recently when closer ties began to be formed through shared training facilities and clubhouse.
The Mens and Ladies sections are both thriving, whilst the Juniors also have a fine history although somewhat shorter than that of the Mens and Ladies sections, having only started in the mid 1980's.
During World War Two both clubs were disbanded, reforming in the late 1940s. Since then both the Mens and Ladies sections have enjoyed sustained success, with the Ladies especially producing some of the leading players in the region and the country, including a number of highly noted GB, English and Welsh Internationals such as Mandy Davies, Lisa Bayliss, Linda Watkins, Hilary Rose, Barbara Hambly O.B.E and Jane Sixsmith M.B.E.
Whilst the Mens team have not consistently produced players of International standing, they do have a very strong player base that sees the first XI hovering around the top two Divisions, although success is not always measured purely by results on the pitch. Notably, the superb social spirit of the club is one of it's main strengths and is something the Sutton Men are very proud of- indeed this spirit is noted within Midlands Hockey and is something many other clubs would dearly love to achieve.
