We’re going back to the Premier Division

The Mighty Pinks secured promotion back to the Jaffa Super 6s Premier Division with a great weekend of performances at Nottingham Trent University.

Saturday started with a win over Cambridge City, even Helen Richardson-Walsh couldn’t stop the Mighty Pinks and Beth Peers hat-trick helped Sutton to a 4-1 win.

The only defeat of the campaign came against eventual champions Surbiton and that only by a single goal in a tight 0-1 game.

Sunday’s first game was a promotion decider against 3rd place Sevenoaks. Sutton made the perfect start with a goal from captain Vicky Woolford in the the first minute, a lead that she doubled in the 10th. Sevenoaks closed the gap in the 13th minute with a penalty stroke. Sutton almost immediately restored the 2 goal lead with A short corner goal from Woolford for her hat-trick. Sutton went 4-2 ahead with their own penalty stroke, put away by Beth Peers. Sevenoaks weren’t going down without a fight and got back to 4-3 with goals in the 23rd and 27th minutes. Emma McCabe finally settled Sutton’s nerves with the 5th goal in the 37th minute to guarantee both the win and promotion.

Their final match was against a Hareleston Magpies team that had only lost 1 game and it ended in a 3-3 draw. The game see-sawed with Sutton taking a two goal lead, courtesy of Beth Peers only for Magpies to come back to lead 2-3. It took Peers 2nd hat-trick of the weekend to secure the draw for the Mighty Pinks.

Her goal scoring touch saw Beth Peers finish as the top scorer in the division, with 13 goals and Sutton players filled 3 of the top 4 slots with Vicky Woolford 2nd with 10 goals and Emma McCabe 4th with 9 goals.

All the players did a fantastic job, but we note that Emily Spalding at 16 years of age played in all 6 of the games that Sutton won. A rising star to watch indeed.

We look forward to next season back in the Premier Divison and the chance to get to the finals again. Well done to everyone involved
