Sutton Coldfield claim victory over Melton

Sutton Coldfield Men’s 2nd XI made it two wins in a row since their heavy defeat at the hands of Nottingham University a couple of weeks ago, with a comfortable 3-1 win against mid table Melton.

Sutton began the match in positive fashion, but as has often happened this season, conceded an early goal against the run of play. The goal came as a result of a hopeful hit into the D, followed by a lucky ricochet and a shot from a tight angle.

Going a goal down seemed to spark Sutton into life, and within a few minutes of conceding they were level thanks to some good work form Sam Hardman, who played a good ball into the D onto the stick of Ralph Brocklebank, who calmly deflected it in. Sutton then proceeded to have the better of the possession and the chances throughout the first half, with Melton struggling to cope with Sutton’s quick and simple passing and movement. However, Melton looked dangerous on the break, and at 1-1 the game remained in the balance. After a period of sustained pressure Josh Ward finally gave Sutton the lead they deserved with a drag flick from a short corner, making it 2-1 at half time.

The second half continued much the same as the first, with Sutton having long periods of possession in the Melton half, and threatening to score on several occasions. The second half deadlock was finally broken by Tom Peraton, who was able to tap the ball in from close range after being assisted by some good stick work from Oli Gassey. Sutton could, and probably should, have scored more with the number of opportunities they had, but were forced to settle for a final score line of 3-1. This score line flattered the visitors, who were unable to register a single shot on goal in the second half, thanks largely to a Sutton defence bolstered by the return of central defensive stalwart Nick Brewill.

This win helped Sutton return to third place in the league, and they now go into next weekend’s match away to top of the league Boots knowing that a win will but them just 3 points off the promotion places.
