Sutton's 2s began their league campaign at Fortress Wyndley under the stewardship of new skipper Mossy (does he even have a first name?)
against a youthful Leek side.
Fresh off a unique throw and catch warm up where thankfully no injuries were sustained, Sutton started promisingly but were ultimately unable to capitalise on greater possession and began to allow Leek to find holes in the press and put together some good attacks of their own. Sutton thought they had taken the lead midway through the first period only for the goal to be rightly ruled out for a foot in the build up. An errant Sutton pass in defence eventually led to Leek taking the lead however which resulted in a 1-0 scoreline at half time.
The coaching staff of Robin T, Jimmy O and Ollie W sought to reinforce the pre game message of ball retention at half time and implement some necessary changes to the pressing tactics. Rather than ball retention it was goal-leeking that occured and Sutton had a mountain to climb if they were going to get anything out of the game from 2-0 down.
Remarkably though this is exactly what materialised with Jake Turner triangulating the ball into the net with a fiercely ferocious finish before Tom Nicholls released a reverse rocket to level up the scores. Sutton almost snuck a winner at the end but it was not to be and a hard fought draw was probably a fair result.
Congratulations to debutant Murray Watts for a MOTM performance.
Next week Sutton will look to build on their solid start when they travel to Finchfield 2s who won their first fixture 5-2 away at Solihull Blossomfield 1s.
