A good win

Back in the top 4
For our last home game of the season, we faced Cannock 2s. Their recent form had not been great, but Sutton v Cannock is always a match both sides want to win. We knew we couldn't underestimate their side. To find ourselves back in a top 4 position, we knew we had to win but we were also dependent on other results. First things first though, a win was needed. Even more motivating, it was Scooby's birthday, so we definitely needed to win!
Although we didn't underestimate Cannock, it became clear from push-back that the game would be quite one-sided. We were much stronger and Cannock didn't press. They had been conceding quite a few goals and were clearly controlling the damage. Whereas Jo the goalie only came to one save in the whole match, which came in the first half, the Cannock goalie was busy. Chance after chance we had and so far, she had saved every single one. Open play goals were not to be today so far, so it was time to test our short corner strenght. To her own family's disbelief, it was Becky FH who scored our opening goal! A good sweep from the top of the D, beating the logging Cannock goalie gave us the 1-0 lead. Surely we could now start scoring some more goals? Despite our chances, those open play goals just couldn't find their way through. We needed another short corner to extend our lead. A well-worked routine saw Jasper deflect from the near post and we found ourselves 2-0 at half time.
Despite our lead and our winning ways, we weren't completely happy during the team talk. We felt we could do more and we had to try and not drop to their standards. More goals was what we wanted from the second half.
We tried. We constantly pressed them high, fought battles in their half but the goals just wouldn't come. On the other hand, defensively, they hardly got through. They had a few breakthroughs, but strong defending meant they couldn't get a shot on and the only short corner Cannock had was put wide. So it was all Sutton but we couldn't score more goals. Still, a win is a win and a clean sheet was nice too. After the game and later during the day, we found out Boots lost. We went into third till we found out Stourport's result. They won but because Boots lost, we are now in 4th. Next week is crunch time. Depending on our result and Stourport and Boots' results, we can make it into automatic promotion position in the top 4. That would be a great start to our ladies dinner night! If anyone fancies a trip to Loughborough, do come and support us. Hopefully the sun will shine on the Mighty Pink dazzling zebras!
