Great win for a young 3XI side
By Bill Heywood
And a clean sheet to boot
The 3XI are used to fielding a young team and today we had 9 junior outfield players. But if they are good enough, they are old enough and they were certainly good enough against Stourport 3s.
The game started perfectly for Sutton, they won a short corner in the 2nd minute and Sam Hardman expertly picked out Harvey Kang on the right post who made no mistake in deflecting it in for his 4th of the season. The home team dominated possession for the rest of the half, but Stourport always looked as if they could create danger on the break, with their experienced centre forward hard to stop when he had the ball in the 25. However it was Sutton who scored the next goal, again from a short corner; the ball was slipped right to Arjun Malhi who slotted a pinpoint shot into the bottom left corner. After his double last week, Malhi is making a welcome habit of scoring.
The second half remained a tight contest, with Stourport always looking dangerous on the break and Sutton looking to turn possession into goals. The visitors came closest with a shot that ricocheted off the post with captain Heywood beaten in goal. Sutton came very close when a lovely move saw Ollie Gray-Nino fling himself to ground to get on the end of a pass and see his shot go an inch wide. M3 finally made the game comfortable when David Callaghan marked his return to action with a scrambled goal through the keeper’s legs. Dylan Mayne made his 3XI debut and acquitted himself well up front, making good runs and pressuring the Stourport defence well.
This win moves M3 above Stourport who they had started the day level with on points. A tough trip to 4th place Harborne 3s awaits next week
