Despite running out of steam Sutton 3s hold on for 3 points.

After the disappointment of losing the previous week, having been reduced to 10 players through injury, Sutton Men’s 3s were keen to get points on the board at home against Stourport on 10th October 2015.

Sutton fielded a young team who raced out of the blocks, playing at a high tempo, they were making well-timed leads and passing the ball early at pace. Jack Wade playing out of position on the right of a midfield 3 looked assured and was immediately combining well with Dan Richards at right back.

The visitors struggled to cope with the movement of Suttons three forwards and James Ward soon opened the scoring. Sutton continued to dominate with Ben Green adding a second from a penalty corner.

The young centre-back pairing of Ben Moore and Ben Dunnington played with composure beyond their years, offering Stourport little in attack. Sutton were unlucky to concede a goal after a couple of unfortunate deflections left a Stourport forward with a clear sight of goal and able to reduce the deficit.

Sutton didn’t let up however and scored another through Sam Straw before half time though it could have been more.

More of the same was asked for in the second half yet Stourport were able to slow the game down and it became stretched. Tom

Eustace added a fourth, creating space with some neat skill at the top of the D to engineer a reverse stick shot which beat the keeper. Sutton would have been out of sight if they had scored the one on one and even worse a two on one with the Stourpourt goalkeeper, who despite conceding 4 goals had played well.

Whether through tiredness or a belief that the game was won, Sutton reverted to bad habits, holding on to and dribbling the ball far too much with even easy passes being misplaced. The work rate dropped, with leads to the ball not being made and the good shape of the first half disappeared. As the game became scrappy Stourport scored 2 soft goals but Sutton saw out the remaining five minutes comfortably to win 4-3.
