L5 travelled to Nuneaton on Saturday and came away with a victory to lift their spirits after a difficult few weeks.
In bright Spring sunshine, L5 were quick out of the blocks, going close to opening the scoring twice before Megan picked the ball up just inside the opposition’s half and went on a strong run from right to left before laying the ball off to Caitlin with a deft reverse pass. Caitlin then showed calmness to sweep the ball under the keeper before she had time to set herself for a save. 1-0.
The 2nd goal came 10 minutes later after a period of sustained L5 pressure. Megan injected the ball to Trixie from a short corner and although Trixie’s shot from the top of the D was well saved, the ball fell to Megan who had followed up instinctively and slotted home for a well-deserved 2-0 lead.
At that stage, L5 were so dominant it seemed just a question of how many they would win by, but Nuneaton had other ideas and they rallied strongly to force a goal late in the 1st half after a mix up in the L5 defence.
The 2nd half was a much more finely balanced game, with both teams having decent chances to score but neither were able to force another goal and after a nervous last few minutes, that saw L5 defending deeper and deeper, L5 were finally able to claim a valuable 3 points.
Aside from the goal scorers, special mention should go to Jess, Tilly Hope and Serena who stepped up to L5s and showed great promise and tactical awareness throughout the game.
