Seven goals to the good for the Mixed Eleven

Emily Peers

Becky Moore’s barmy army travelled the short distance north to face Tamworth in the first round of the mixed cup.

Sutton started strong and scored early thanks to Will “the jockey” Sheffield’s composure and cool finish. They continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty Flick which Beth Peers calmly finished to make it 2-0. Fortunately, Chris King slotted home to make it 3-0 to the visitors going into half time.

As the second half began, the pressure continued to mount but Tamworth’s keeper made a number of super saves to deny Sutton some early goals. However, forward Jon Best tapped in from close range and the floodgates opened. A backboard breaker from Jack Gutteridge, a powerful strike for Beth Peers second and a big ol’ slap from Laura Groves to make it 7-0! The Dutch “wonder” Jolijn did everything but put the ball in the back of the net… fizzing a reverse stick shot into the keepers chest and narrowly missing some chances in the later stages of the game!

The moment of the game however, was gifted by James Maguire who “graciously” tumbled over his own feet whilst trying to stop a lightning Tamworth counter attack… never has a person fell with such style!

Can Sutton Coldfield Mixed XI make their way to Lee Valley? The team eagerly await to see who they will play next on the 12th December…
