Still undefeated!

Sutton Coldfield Ladies 1's were on the soggy road up north looking to bounce back from a disappointing draw the previous week. Thankfully the match against Wakefield survived the early morning scare with the pitch passing an inspection for flooding and frost. The mighty pinks were determined to get back to winning ways and responded with an excellent performance.

Wakefield started the better of the two teams with some early pressure testing the Sutton defence. It wasn't long before the Mighty Pinks started to get hold of the game with a beautifully worked penalty corner allowing Emma McCabe to deflect expertly into the roof of the net ("She scores when she wants, she scores when she waaaaaaaaants, she's Emma McCabe, she scores when she wants"). Jess Batsford-Webb then won a penalty stroke after see her goal-bound flick 34B'd off the line by a Wakefield defender. Vicky Woolford stepped up and converted to put the Mighty Pinks 2 nil up in the first quarter. Sutton's movement and forward play was causing Wakefield all sorts of trouble and the Mighty Pinks were unlucky not to add to their goal tally in the first half with some resolute defending from Wakefield helping to keep the score within reach.

As the game progressed, the technical official could be seen getting his abacus out to keep track of both the scoreline and card count. With Wakefield going down to 9 players on two occasions in the first half and several more cards for both sides in the second I really couldn't tell you if there were more goals or cards in the game. Much to the amusement of some (and not to others!) an expertly performed parody of 'Wrongfully Accused' starring Leslie Nielsen, Charlotte Cross-Fellows and Leah Redfern played out in a bizarre second half.

It was also a case of the mysterious left post as at least 3 chances some how squirmed past the arriving Mighty Pinks in a game that could have easily seen twice the number of goals. Sue Wood finally earned her spot in the 'car share of goalscorers' with a goal that was all about the assist from Cross-Fellows (and some cheeky 3D skills). Wood, later arrested for 'mugging' the opposition. Wakefield then got themselves back in the game converting through the second phase of a penalty corner before Vicky Woolford stepped up again to score another penalty stroke after a mistimed tackle. The game got a bit more heated with Sutton getting caught up with umpiring decisions (cool heads needed for the next game!) and Wakefield earn't themselves a second goal to make the final score 4-2.

Sutton played some outstanding hockey in the match with strong performances across the pitch, including Gandalf Manning ("You Shall Not Pass") who must be a nightmare for the opposition. Special shout out to travelling supporters The Wood Family (thanks for the cookies, please change the granny hat), Pat Thomas (it must have been sunny) and Graham Batsford (lateness appears to run in the family).
