Having come from behind to win for each of the last 3 games, L5 shocked the opposition, their supporters and themselves by actually scoring first against Stratford!
With only a couple of minutes gone, and while most of the players were still trying to work out how to survive the cold and rain, Trixie drove down the left wing. Cornered by 2 defenders and looking like she was going nowhere, Trixie had other ideas. She pulled the ball back, rode both challenges, created space for herself, and lasered a shot past the bemused keeper.
Stratford did not know what had hit them, and L5 spent a good 70% of the rest of the half camped in Stratford’s 22. Only some cat-like reflexes from Stratford’s keeper stopped L5 from increasing their lead by at least another 2 or 3, with L5 peppering the goal with shot after shot.
The 2nd half was much the same story until Tilly reacted quickest to a loose ball from a short corner to drive the ball home for her 1st senior goal.
Maybe it was going 2 down; maybe it was the cold and rain finally getting to L5 but Stratford would not lie down and started to find gaps in the L5 defence that had been marshalled brilliantly by Sarah and Megan S.
However, despite a goal with 5 minutes left spoiling Sam’s clean sheet (which her performance would have really deserved) L5 held on to record a 4th victory on a row.
So many good performances right across the pitch in really unpleasant weather, and a well-deserved Girl of the Game award for Maddie.
