You know that a team is playing well when a player dominates the first half with a well taken hat trick, but does not win the Girl of the Game award.
The hat trick went to Megan G, but Girl of the Game was Hannah with a display of selflessness, maturity and determination in both defence and midfield.
Megan’s hat trick took just under 20 minutes. She opened the scoring after picking up a deflection, spinning to lose a defender and slotting home. 10 minutes later she made it 2-0 after breaking through 2 tackles and reacting quickest to the loose ball after a decent save by the keeper. The hat-trick was completed a few minutes later when Megan feinted left, drove right and fired home.
The game was put to bed in 2 second half minutes when first Caitlin and then Letty got the rewards their tireless efforts deserved to put L5 5-0 ahead.
This was a controlled display by L5. Berkswell were a decent side but they were not given any time to settle on the ball due to the harrying from L5’s front 3, excellent closing down of space by the midfield and a calmness in defence. The scoreline did not, in any way, flatter L5, who had at least another 4 or 5 decent chances to score, and there were outstanding performances right across the team, from Sam (keeping a clean sheet) to the defence, mopping up anything Berkswell could throw against them, in midfield (especially with Maddie in a sweeper role) and up to the young tyros in the forward line. A great game to watch and a really good result!
