After an enforced week off due to the frost, L5 got straight back to winning ways with a hard fought victory away to Edgbaston 3s.
Deprived of their usual midfield leader, Nuala, L5 simply re-jigged their line-up, knuckled down and showed the team-spirit and fight that is becoming the hallmark of this young team.
The first half was scoreless, despite L5 having the majority of the attacking play and several near misses from short corners, but Edgbaston were always threatening on the break and the L5 defence had to stay on their toes.
The second half followed a similar pattern with both teams probing for the opening goal, but it was L5 that scored it after Megan fired in a quick ball and Letty was able to get a touch that took the ball under the Edgbaston keeper.
With time running out fast Edgbaston threw everything forward and L5s supporters held their breath as Edgbaston’s centre forward found herself in space at the top of the D with the goal seemingly at her mercy. However, out of nowhere appeared Trixie to take the ball off the end of the forward’s stick and clear to safety. A brave and match-saving tackle.
That was the last chance for Edgbaston and L5 celebrated a well-deserved win after a close and competitive game.
Once again, L5 had heroes right across the pitch, from Sam and the indomitable back four with another clean sheet, the ceaseless running of the midfield and the never-say-die attitude of the forwards, but a special mention (and a happy 13th birthday) should go to girl of the game Preeth who was marked her senior debut with a performance of skill and maturity.
